Our Story
The Kikongo word “mooyo” means soul, spirit, or vital force. It is believed to be the root of the English word “mojo”, a word still used today to describe that spark of magic that gives life special meaning.
In African and African-American culture, mojo has long represented nkisi: charms, objects or vessels filled with energy to guide, protect, and empower.
For Mooyo, our nkisi is the Cape Robin Chat. With its changing song announcing the seasons, it embodies creativity, transformation, and freedom of spirit. For founder Jo Shepherd, this bird represents the power of creativity to change lives.
